Colby called it a head coach play. He sees this as the biggest game of Willie Fritz’s tenure at Houston, a team he says could easily be undefeated: there was the hiccup against UCF, and Houston came within about an inch of the Texas Tech game on a two-point conversion. He rates Fritz as close to elite and expects Oklahoma State to slide back toward the long Big 12 odds it carried in the preseason.
The case for the Cowboys is through the air. The guys noted Houston’s run defense ranks fourth nationally while its pass defense ranks 118th, and Oklahoma State’s passing offense ranks sixth at 322.4 yards per game. That had one of the guys worried about a backdoor cover, and the final Houston pick came with an admission that it didn’t feel great.
What tipped it back was the spot. Oklahoma State is a team the guys like better at home than on the road, and backing them now may mean buying at the high point, just as they start showing up on the public radar.
