Colby’s read on Tulane is blunt. He calls them a shell of their former self, says they look iffy this year and nothing like the Tulane teams of the past, and points out they are coming off a triple option trip to West Point to play Army. Asked who starts at quarterback, he said he doesn’t think they really have one. The answer from across the table: two starters means none. Colby also admitted he defended the Tulane coaching hire early and now leans toward thinking he isn’t the guy for the job.
The case for Tulane did get aired. One of the guys pointed out that Tulane held its first practice outside rather than in its air-conditioned bowl, and wondered whether a Friday night home dog with its back to the wall gets up for this one. Memphis can run it down their throat, he allowed, but that was the concern. It didn’t survive the next few minutes.
What sealed it was Memphis itself. Colby called this the best version of Memphis in a long time and “a cash cow,” and the guys noted Memphis has failed to cover only one of its wins. “This is a team you can trust” was the verdict, and the doubter came around with “you talked me into Memphis.”
The segment opened on a tangent worth keeping. Colby revived a friend of the show’s idea: an annual riverboat trip for both rosters down the Mississippi to New Orleans, documented the whole way for social media. The counteroffer was to put the field on the riverboat, sideline river included.
