Alabama comes in off a loss to Georgia, and before anyone got to the pick the officiating took a beating, mostly over an interception call that got overturned. Once that was out of the way, the Alabama argument started with an admission: normally you would want to fade Bama off a game like that. The counterweight was what one of the guys saw watching Tennessee against Arkansas last week, which did not impress, plus a look-ahead spot for Tennessee.

The road résumé came up too. That win at Kentucky looks better now that Kentucky has turned out to be good, and laying a big number with a road favorite off a loss did not scare the Alabama side. Asked directly about a letdown, the answer was no, they think Alabama shows up fired up. The sharpest line of the segment was about Tennessee itself: it has beaten nobody good, it is hard to know what it is, and it might be fool’s gold.

The case for Tennessee was the spot and only the spot. The Georgia game was physical, the buildup around it was big, and it is reasonable to think Alabama had an emotional dump afterward. Add a Tennessee team that has stood up at home before, and 8.5 points looked like plenty. The concession came with it: Alabama is the much better team. That was the only Tennessee vote at the table.
