The segment opened with a needle about Virginia’s home-field angle, which doesn’t count for much with the game in Dallas. Colby didn’t budge on Virginia having one of the best stadiums in America, then got to the actual point: lay it with SMU. Syracuse has burned through its quarterback depth chart this year, injury after injury, yet it still had success in the air against Virginia. Colby figures that if a punter’s knee hadn’t touched the ground on a punt, Syracuse probably wins that game.
From there he built the SMU side. He rates SMU’s quarterback as arguably the best in the conference, top three at worst, and thinks he can exploit a Virginia team that is one-dimensional right now. Colby had Virginia 93rd in the nation in passing, and said that if you take away the Week 0 NC State game, those numbers fall into the 120s. Another voice on the panel brought up a graph that put Virginia’s Week 1 among the worst teams, all the way in the corner, and agreed the team has been figured out.
The Virginia ticket came from someone who has paid for SMU before. SMU comes off a bye and may have cleaned some things up, but the worry voiced on air was that this is a team with a ton of talent that plays sloppy and lets inferior opponents hang around, after laying the number with SMU against Boston College and watching that happen. Laying more than a touchdown with that profile was too much. “This SMU team’s taken enough of my money,” was how the case closed. Nobody ever settled what a wahoo actually is.
