Jayson Tatum enters the 2023/24 NBA season as a leading (perhaps THE leading) candidate for MVP. However, a double-double machine he is not. He has posted a total of 90 double-doubles over the course of his career, an average of about once every five games. Playing against a very strong Knicks team on their home court, I don’t think Tatum will hit double figures in two categories Wednesday night.
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander – Higher than 29.5 Points
After a breakout fifth NBA season (and a productive summer playing for Team Canada), Shai Gilgeious-Alexander is another player getting MVP chatter heading into this year. And I think he gets out of the game quickly and goes for at least 30 points in the Thunder’s season opener. After all, the man averaged 31.4 per game last season, and despite the constantly improving OKC roster, he is still going to be leaned on to score.
Victor Wembanyama – Higher than 25.0 Pts + Rebs + Asts
The San Antonio Spurs suddenly find themselves relevant for the first time since their championship dynasty years. And it’s all because of Victor Wembanyama. While the rookie is sure to have some first-game jitters, he’s going up against a toothless Dallas Mavericks defense. Even if his shots aren’t falling, he’ll be hitting the boards hard and should get past the 25.0 Pts + Rebs + Asts.
