Ryan opened it as a defense-wins-championships game and then spent most of his time on the schedule. Miami stayed out on the West Coast between road games and did its team building in Napa, which he liked a lot more than a red-eye home and back. San Francisco is traveling the other direction, home from Australia, with a divisional game against Arizona the week after this one. He was careful not to oversell that as a look-ahead spot, but he said this stretch has been circled for months.
His concern was genuine. The 49ers took the Rams apart up front in Australia, and he thought they could do it again here and let the game run away on turnovers. He was not sold on what Miami got from its quarterback play either, including sacks he described as self-created. He still wanted the points.
Sean’s angle was the trip itself. Everybody agrees that the week back from Australia is the part that gets you, he said, so he does not see how that fails to matter against an opponent this beatable. In his read the Dolphins are young enough that they do not know they are bad yet, so they will still play hard. He also went down a 49ers injury list he summed up as “what else is new,” a promising rookie out until at least Week 10, another player he follows out for the season, and a quiet game from Kittle.
For a comparison he went back to 2025, when the 49ers beat a division rival at home and then went to New Orleans against a team nobody respected and won 26-21. He first remembered that as a non-cover, then corrected himself on air that the spread was only three, and said the point he was actually making was the lack of margin against a bad team. Ryan gave the shortest version of the whole thing. Thirteen points in the NFL, one team flying back from another hemisphere, so he is on the Dolphins too, begrudgingly.
