The case for Detroit came first. The Giants had just shown everyone how to attack Arizona: blitz, press the receivers and hope Trey McBride doesn’t beat you. The Cardinals quarterback looked competent early in that game and lost his way once the Giants switched to man coverage and sent pressure, and getting after the quarterback is the one thing this Detroit defense does well. The show also noted Arizona’s offensive line is down two of its five starters from the last game.
Sean took the other side without much hesitation. He can’t lay 5.5 with a Detroit defense he called horrible, in a back-to-back road spot, with the Lions able to see the bye and their injured players coming back after it. He conceded that Detroit’s coach has been good against the spread off losses, then pointed out that the Lions couldn’t slow down a banged-up Carolina team. His forecast: Arizona puts up something like 35, covers, and is live to win outright.
Ryan wasn’t moved. He had just watched the Cardinals secondary up close and thinks it gets roasted. When Sean asked how the Lions are supposed to stop McBride, Ryan’s answer was the same way the Giants did, by pressuring the quarterback. Sean reminded him Arizona was on the road last week and is home now. Ryan’s view is that the offensive line problem comes along either way.
Sean figured nobody was betting the Cardinals. Ryan checked the splits, called them right down the middle, and read the sharp side as Detroit, same as him. Then he made it official: of all of Sean’s Week 5 picks, Arizona as a home dog is the one he likes least.
