Ryan opened by reminding everyone that they circled this as a winnable game back in the Dolphins and Jets previews, and that Miami coming off the bye is a check in its favor. His read on the Jets is that they are about what he expected: not a bad team, not a good one. Sean was blunter. He still thinks the Jets are a bad team and put a lot of it on Aaron Glenn and the way he handles the end of halves and games, which got Ryan talking about how badly the Jets have been outscored in the last two minutes before halftime.
Ryan still landed on the Jets. He thinks they have been covering against teams in their own class and are punching down for the first time all season here, with the better roster, the better quarterback, a defense that has been playing well and the home crowd. He admitted five is a big number for this matchup.
Sean said this is the spot to fade Geno Smith, who he had at 3 and 11 against the spread as a favorite of three and a half or more. Laying five with him is a no for Sean, especially against a winless team that is desperate and had two weeks to get ready for the Jets. He expects Miami to run the ball some, and he pointed to the way the Dolphins found late covers against the Bengals and the Vikings. Ryan agreed the Jets are as willing as anyone to leave that door open.
What tipped Ryan was the feel of the number. He called Miami the public dog with fleas, said he had promised himself he was done betting the Dolphins, and suspects five could grow. Sean wasn’t buying it, saying he has heard nobody make a case for Miami all season, and finished with “Dolphins all day. Fins up.”
