Ryan’s point about that finish was simple clock math. The Giants had already had their possession in overtime, so Washington only needed a field goal and had nothing to gain by running time off. Unless you were trying to pick up yards, he said, there was no reason for Jayden Daniels to be messing around with the ball, and he expects his quarterback to know the situation. Sean agreed that Daniels deserves the most blame, but he put a real share on the coaching staff for calling a pass play at all, since a sack or a penalty could have kept the clock running. Sean also noted Daniels ran for 100 yards in that game wearing an elbow brace, and that his post-game press conference came across as throwing the staff under the bus.
The football case for San Francisco came from the same game. Ryan said the way the Giants put Washington’s defense in conflict is right up Shanahan’s alley, and that the 49ers offense should have a lot of success. Sean pointed out that Washington has been bad against tight ends, and Ryan added that the defense had no answer once the Giants started lining tight ends up out wide.
Then there is the locker room. Ryan admitted the show usually likes to buy teams low, but said it is reasonable to stay off Washington if Daniels and Dan Quinn have lost the team. Sean brought up the Commanders going out of their way to name Marcus Mariota a captain for the rest of the year, something he said he had never heard of for a backup quarterback. Ryan read it as Mariota being the leadership voice in that room, and when he asked whether Quinn makes it to the end of the year, Sean said things are not trending the right way for him.
