Ryan Kramer called it a diabolical bit of scheduling: the Eagles fly home from London and get a Carolina team coming off its bye, with kickoff Sunday, October 18 at 1:00 PM ET in Philadelphia, PA. By Ryan’s count the spot has come up four times before and the team in Philadelphia’s position lost all four, so he took the Panthers as 1-point favorites, the number when the guys taped on October 14. Sean Green, an Eagles fan, went the other way. The full argument is on the NFL Picks Week 6 episode.
Panthers vs Eagles Odds
The Panthers were 1-point favorites over the Eagles with a total of 40 when the guys taped on October 14. That makes Philadelphia a home underdog, which is what caught Ryan’s eye in the first place.
Our Picks
- Ryan Kramer (@KramerCentric): Panthers -1
- Sean Green (@SeanTGreen): Eagles +1
Ryan pitched it as one of those once-in-a-blue-moon spots you circle before the season and stick with, the same way the show backed the Steelers a week earlier. Sean agreed it looked good for Carolina on paper, then picked it apart. Teams off a bye haven’t been a profitable ATS angle in a long time, he said, and teams coming back from England without a bye haven’t either, both over much larger samples than four games. Ryan’s reply was that the 0-4 only shows up where those two circles meet.
Sean’s other angles were about the matchup. He loves fading Carolina off a bye and as a road favorite, and he isn’t paying for Bryce Young laying points on the road. The Eagles defense, in his view, is playing incredibly well. The offense is the problem, especially after halftime: Sean thinks injuries and a new playbook have left them with a short list of plays that work early and nothing to adjust to once that runs out. He did expect some of the injured Eagles to get back on the field.
Ryan saw the same split and came out on Carolina’s side of it. The Panthers have the big edge on offense, the Eagles have it on defense, and he’d rather fade an Eagles offense he called embarrassing. When Ryan checked the betting splits, support looked close to even on both teams. Along the way the two of them got sidetracked for a full minute on whether the Giants had celebrated a tie, which Sean called loser mentality.
