Sean came in with the case for the dog and talked himself out of it. Division dogs have been good this season, he said, and he noted Herbert has a strong record against the spread as an underdog of six or more. If Kansas City weren’t coming off the bye, eight points in a division game is a number he’d probably take with the Chargers. What stopped him was the Chargers’ offensive line. He called it one of the big trench mismatches of the week and said he doesn’t see how they get a running game going, on top of a roster he described as incredibly banged up.
Ryan’s argument was blunter: the Chargers are bad, and it’s Mahomes and Reid with an extra week. He dug into what he called micro matchups. Kansas City’s defense plays a lot of man coverage, and by his read the Chargers have struggled against man. He also liked the Chiefs’ run game against a defense he said has been missing tackles. Mahomes, he added, comes off the bye feeling healthier than he’s felt.
The worry was the number. Sean said Mahomes as a big favorite has not been a good bet, calling him the king of winning and not covering, a point Ryan had already raised about the Chiefs and big numbers. They shrugged and called it the donkey play of the week. Sean’s closing line: any time he bets against Andy Reid coming off a bye, he feels dumb for it.
