The whole thing comes down to the Texas offense. The show had the Longhorns somewhere in the 80s nationally in quarterback play, out of 138 teams, and 79th in overall offense. Whether that lands on Arch Manning or on Steve Sarkisian‘s play calling, nobody at the table wanted to lay double digits on it. Sarkisian took the harder hit, called the most overrated coach in the sport, and Florida’s head coach got the nod over him.

There was a real case the other way, and the guys made it themselves. They noted Florida allowed 39, 28, 45 and 38 points in its first four SEC games, and that the Texas defense sits in the top 10 in yards per play. If Arch is ever going to get right, this looks like the spot. They also pointed out that outside of the Ohio State game, where the Buckeyes built a big lead and went conservative, the teams Texas has faced have not had much offense.

Ryan said his default on a game like this is Horns down and laying the points. He took Florida anyway. His thinking: a trip out of town might do the Gators good after getting booed at home, and Texas has given him no reason to trust it with a number this big.
