NBA First Scorer Props – November 27
Houston Rockets vs. Philadelphia 76ers
Tipoff – 7:00 pm EST
Wells Fargo Center – Philadelphia, PA
Broadcast – NBA TV
One of the best spots prior to the holiday is getting in on the Rockets to score first against the 76ers. We’ll have a small, but not insignificant, advantage on the tipoff. Alperen Sengun is grabbing the opening possession at a 55.6% clip. Joel Embiid is again out of commission for Wednesday, which means Andre Dummond and his 44.4% tip wins will be in action. However, it’s more than just being about the tip. The 76ers aren’t getting many first scores off of those tips – just 43.7% on the year. Meanwhile, nobody in the NBA is better than the Rockets at getting on the board first. They’ve scored first in 79.0% of all games this year.
The Rockets have spread their first scoring out amongst four of their five starters. Everybody but Dillon Brooks has been on the board first at least twice already. However, just two of them have been seeing early action consistently as of late. Both Jabari Smith Jr. and Alperen Sengun have taken one of the first three shots in each of the last three games. Smith is coming off of scoring first last game, so we’ll pivot to the man with the most on the team with Sengun – he has six already.

New York Knicks vs. Dallas Mavericks
Tipoff – 7:30 pm EST
American Airlines Center – Dallas, TX
Broadcast – ESPN
The Mavericks are a middle of the pack team in all the important early game indicators. That puts them just a touch about the Knicks, but not by much. However, what separates them here is that the Mavericks were putting up terrible numbers early in the year to the point where they were an auto-fade. That was with Daniel Gafford on the tip – as he was winning just 36.4% of his tips. Now with Dereck Lively Jr. on the jump, along with his 71.4% success rate, those numbers are headed in the right direction. That alone is enough for me to get behind the Mavericks here.
I’m someone who believes that a trend can only last for so long – that when we see the same guy scoring first every time that there is a point to jump off that train. However, the time to jump off the PJ Washington train is not there. He’s taken the first shot for the Mavericks in every game since the Luka Doncic injury. Not only that, he’s scored three of their last four first buckets, with the only person keeping it from being perfect being Doncic, who is now not there. Somehow he’s still at +750, which means he’s worth at least one more play to see if this trend can continue.
