MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – July 11

Washington Nationals vs. New York Mets

First Pitch – 1:10 pm EST
Citi Field – Queens, New York
Broadcast – MLB TV

The Nationals continue to be the worst team in the league at scoring in the first inning. They’re averaging just 0.27 first inning runs per game and haven’t scored in the first in the last four – including both games in this series. Things won’t get much easier for them as they face David Peterson, who has been solid as of late. He hasn’t allowed more than two earned runs in a game since June 12th. In that month’s time, his ERA has come down from 4.32 to where it sits now at 3.58. On this kind of run, he shouldn’t have any issues with the Nationals bats.

Despite being a much better offense, it’s taken the Mets a while to get going as well. They have consistently been in the bottom half of the league in first inning runs. On top of that, they are even worse at home, where they rank 22nd in the MLB in scoring early. MacKenzie Gore hasn’t been as good as of late, but he still pitched well against the Mets when he saw them in the beginning of July. He went 5.2 innings with just one earned run in that game, and that run didn’t come until the sixth inning.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for July 11: No (-130)

Chicago Cubs vs. Baltimore Orioles

First Pitch – 6:35 pm EST
Camden Yards – Baltimore, Maryland
Broadcast – MLB TV

We rode this game to a NRFI yesterday with a couple of studs on the mound. Perhaps the duo today has a bit less name value, but I actually think it’s a better matchup.

In the top of the first Albert Suarez will look to limit the Cubs bats. Since coming back to being a starter, he’s allowed more than three earned runs just one time. If you take that trainwreck against Houston out of the equation, Suarez would have a sub-2.00 ERA on the year. The Cubs are a middle of the back offensive club and he should have no problem getting through the first.

On the other side, Justin Steele will try to wrap up the NRFI for us against this Baltimore offense. While the surface numbers for the Orioles are solid, they have been a bit stagnant lately. They’ve scored just two runs in this series so far. Steele won’t be a reprieve for them with the way he’s throwing. He’s coming off a complete game with just one run against the Angels and hasn’t allowed more than three runs in a game since May.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for July 11: No (-110)
