MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – July 7

Athletics vs. Detroit Tigers

First Pitch – 6:40 pm EST
Comerica – Detroit, MI
Broadcast – MLB TV

First on the bump in this one is the back-to-back AL Cy Young winner, Tarik Skubal. While his injury has him playing a bit below his award-winning level, he still is one of the better pitchers in the league. Additionally, he looked like his old self last time out – throwing 6.0 innings against the Yankees and only allowing one run on one hit. He also fanned nine in that game. He draws the Athletics at the perfect time. They have lost seven of their last eight games and scored four or fewer runs in five of those. Skubal won’t be the one that they change that trend against.

Detroit isn’t having quite as bad of a time as the Athletics are lately, but they are still struggling to score runs. They rank in the bottom third of MLB in terms of runs per game. JT Ginn isn’t likely to help matters here. He carries a 3.04 ERA into action on Tuesday and is fresh off of shutting down a tough Dodgers lineup. The Tigers should be an easier out for him here and I expect him to get us three quick outs.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for July 7: No (-130)

Seattle Mariners vs. Miami Marlins

First Pitch – 6:40 pm EST
loanDepot park – Miami, FL
Broadcast – MLB TV

Seattle gets first hacks in this one and they are perfect for an NRFI play. Not only are they slightly below the league average, but they have been much worse in the first inning. They are 23rd in the majors with 0.47 first inning runs per game and they haven’t scored in the first in any of their last ten games. That’s especially good news for us with Max Meyer on the hill. His 2.53 ERA should hold up just fine here. Plus, you have to love his swing and miss stuff – 112 strikeouts in just 103.0 innings.

The bottom of the first might be a bit more of a sweat with the Marlins bats. They rank just above league average when it comes to run scoring, coming in at 13th. However, I’ll trust the stuff of Bryan Woo, who has had an up and down year. Even with some of the bad starts he’s had, he’s been great at keeping the ball in the park. He has allowed just three dingers in his last ten starts and with the Marlins not being a long ball team, they will need to have a bunch of guys get hot early to upset our play.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for July 7: No (-130)
