MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – July 6
New York Yankees vs. Tampa Bay Rays
First Pitch – 6:40 pm EST
Tropicana Field – St. Petersburg, FL
Broadcast – MLB TV
The last second pitching change on Sunday nearly cost us an NRFI as the Rays switched to Mason Englert. The move was to give Griffin Jax one more day of rest and line him up to help take out the division rivals. While the Yankees are a better hitting team, I’m still tailing Jax. He has allowed just five total runs in his last five starts – posting a 1.73 ERA in the process. Additionally, the Yankees have been struggling with the bats lately. They’ve scored just 15 runs in their last five games combined for a 3.00 runs per game average.
The bottom of the inning should be no sweat at all. Not only is Tampa Bay a below average team scoring runs, but they are fresh off being shutout by Peter Lambert and a band of relievers. The Astros pitching crew held them to just four hits and two walks. Now they’ll have the ill fortune of trying to turn things around against Cam Schlittler. The consensus AL Cy Young frontrunner has been amazing this year. He ranks in the top five of the majors in ERA, WHIP and strikeouts.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for July 6: No (-130)
Arizona Diamondbacks vs. San Diego Padres
First Pitch – 9:40 pm EST
Petco Park – San Diego, CA
Broadcast – FS1
Kicking off this NRFI is going to be Walker Buehler toeing the rubber. Maybe his 4.61 ERA doesn’t inspire confidence, but the June that he had should. Over the course of five starts in June, Buehler never allowed more than one run in a game and maintained a 1.71 ERA in that span. Arizona is not exactly the team to get him off track. They rank 19th in the league in run scoring and are in the bottom third of the league in first inning scoring. Look for Buehler to find his form and get us through the first inning here.
The bottom of the inning sees one of the most disappointing offenses out there. San Diego is dead last in the majors in run scoring with 3.91 per game. They also are dead last when it comes to scoring in the first inning – 0.35 runs per game. I’d take a pitching machine against the top of their order to get an NRFI. We’ll get better than that with Brandon Pfaadt on the bump. After acting as a reliever for the last month or so, he shut down the Giants in his return to the rotation. Last week he threw 5.1 innings and allowed just one run, which was on a Luis Arraez solo homer.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for July 6: No (-110)
