Champions League: Round of 16 Leg 2 – Picks, Predictions, and Best Bets
Tottenham and Athletico Madrid BTTS (-170)
Tottenham doesn’t look like they’re shutting down much of anything lately. It’s not just the 6-1 loss to Athletico in the first leg of this round, but they’ve conceded two or more goals in seven of their last eight contests across competitions. Some might point to the home game here as a reason to be optimistic, but they just surrendered three goals to Crystal Palace at home less than two weeks ago. That end of this BTTS should cash without any concern.
On the other side of things, Athletico hasn’t exactly been a steady defensive line either. They did pick up a clean sheet against Getafe last time out, but had given up multiple goals in three straight prior. Plus, as futile as Tottenham has been when it comes to results, they haven’t been shutout since February 7th against Manchester United, and that was due to an early red card.
Barcelona (-175) over Newcastle
Some late goal scoring has this one in a dead heat going into the second leg. However, that home magic for Newcastle is likely set to run out in this one. With the pressure they’ve been putting up from from Marc Bernal, Raphinha, and Lamine Yamal, it seems unlikely that Newcastle will keep them quiet until the 86 minute again. They’ve also been borderline unstoppable at home as of late. In their last six games, they have six wins with a combine goal total of 21-4. The Newcastle draw at home was a nice story, but one that likely ends here.
Bodo Glimt to Draw with Sporting CP (+425)
Speaking of good stories, Bodo Glimt seems to be the story that just does not want to end. Despite sitting in second in Norway’s Eliteserien last season, they are on the verge of a berth into the quarterfinals. The agressive play up top from Kasper Høgh has put them in prime position to take this one home – scoring a 3-0 victory in the first leg.
We do recognize that a home game for Sporting in the much more friendly Portugese climate should make things easier for them. However, they ended without a goal last game and Bodo Glimt should be even heavier on the defense in this one. Expect them to park the bus and look for the draw to advance.
Paris Saint-Germain (+195) over Chelsea
This series shifts over to London after an absolute beatdown in Paris. PSG looked the part for most of the game, then they put things out of reach with a late brace from Khvicha Kvaratskhelia. Chasing three goals, Chelsea is likely to be a bit more desperate in the front. That tends to lend itself – particularly against a team like PSG – to a lot more turnovers. With how possessive PSG can be at times, you have to imagine that they’ll wear down Chelsea. Look for them to score late and steal a result that they don’t even really need on Tuesday.
