MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – July 30
Boston Red Sox vs. Minnesota Twins
First Pitch – 1:10 pm EST
Target Field – Minneapolis, MN
Broadcast – MLB TV
For our first NRFI of the day, we’ll head out to Target field for one of the early first pitches of the day. Throwing that early first pitch is Zebby Matthews. Since coming back up to the big club in the middle of July, he’s given them two scoreless first innings. Additionally, he’s coming off, perhaps, the best start of his young career. He went 6.0 strong last game against Washington, allowing no runs or walks and just two hits. He also has legit strikeout stuff, which should help him against the Red Sox here. They rank 28th in team strikeouts – only ahead of the Rockies and Angels. Between the big swing and miss stuff and the fact that the Red Sox’s offense is trending downward, Matthews should give us three quick outs.
Speaking of teams that have offenses that have slipped a bit, the Twins really haven’t been able to find their fotting as of late. In the last week, they’ve scored just 18 total runs, which comes out to 3.0 runs per game. If they posted that number over the season, it would put them in dead last. Additionally, they are one of the worst teams when it comes to scoring in the first inning. They rank 27th in the majors with 0.37 first inning runs per game. Things shouldn’t be much easier for them with Brayan Bello on the bump. In the month of July, he’s posted a 3.13 ERA and has faced teams like the Cubs and Dodgers to get that. The Twins should be a relative cake walks for him.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for July 30: No (-125)
Philadelphia Phillies vs. Chicago White Sox
First Pitch – 2:10 pm EST
Rate Field – Chicago, IL
Broadcast – MLB TV
We rode this game to an NRFI win on Tuesday and are ready to double down on it here. Jonathan Cannon may not have pitched as well as we wanted for the White Sox, but he was good for the first three outs. On Wednesday, we get a pitcher we can trust even more. Adrian Houser has been outstanding this season for the southsiders. He has a 2.10 ERA on the year and he hasn’t given up a first inning run since June 13th in a game in Arlington. That was the only first inning run he’s given up all year, which givens him a 0.81 ERA in the opening frame. The Phillies are a solid hitting team, but that instills the confidence in me.
The bottom of the inning is a much easier situation thanks to the bats of the White Sox. They rank 27th in the majors with just 3.77 runs per game. Despite those ugly numbers, they’ve actually been worse over their last four games – posting just 3.50 runs per game in that stretch. They’ll face Taijuan Walker, who granted hasn’t been amazing since getting back into Philadelphia’s rotation. He has given us two scoreless first innings in three tries though, and really looked to find his feet against the Yankees last time out. If there is a team that will help him get back to where he wants to be, it’s the White Sox.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for July 30: No (-115)
