MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – July 11

Athletics vs. Chicago White Sox

First Pitch – 2:10 pm EST
Rate Field – Chicago, IL
Broadcast – MLB TV

The Athletics are first to the plate in this one and their offense is nothing to fear. They rank just below average in terms of run scoring and run scoring in the first inning. However, their recent performance lags well behind their averages. They have scored just five total runs in their last four games (1.25 per game) and are currently on a seven-game losing streak. They’ve also lost 11 of 12. The White Sox are going with an opener here – which I typically try to avoid for NRFI purposes. This opener is just a bit different though. Bryan Hudson enters action on Saturday with a 2.25 ERA and has allowed just two earned runs over his last ten appearances.

The White Sox are a bit better of a run scoring team, but actually struggle much more in the first inning. They rank in the bottom third of the league when it comes to scoring in the first inning. They’ll get young, lefty starter Gage Jump here. While he’s been tagged a bit lately, he still has a 3.77 ERA on the year. Additionally, he’s fanned 41 in 43.0 innings this year, which should help him pitch out of any jams that he happens to find himself in.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for July 11: No (-120)

Seattle Mariners vs. Tampa Bay Rays

First Pitch – 4:10 pm EST
Tropicana Field – St. Petersburg, FL
Broadcast – MLB TV

The top of the first features the bats of the Mariners, or rather whichever ones show up. They have been amongst the worst hitting teams in the majors this year. They currently rank 28th in run scoring with just 4.03 runs per game – only ahead of the Padres and Guardians. They are also in the bottom third of the league in terms of first inning scoring. That won’t get easier with Griffin Jax on the bump. He now has six straight starts allowing three runs or less with a 2.32 ERA in that stretch. Add in that he’s accumulated 36 strikeouts in 31.0 innings, and he’s on a roll that you want to tail.

The Rays are also in the bottom third of the league when it comes to scoring in the first. While they are a bit better over the course of the full game, we’re putting our stock in Logan Gilbert for this one. He’s rocking a 3.19 ERA on the year and his 114 strikeouts has him ranked in the top 20 of the majors. Add in that he’s allowed one or less runs in four of his last five starts and he should be a lock to give us a clean first frame.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for July 11: No (-120)
