MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – July 9

Tampa Bay Rays vs. Detroit Tigers

First Pitch – 5:10 pm EST
Comerica Park –Detroit, MI
Broadcast – MLB TV

For our first NRFI play on Wednesday, we’ll look to a couple of teams that are actually hitting quite well. Despite their relative success, I really like the pitching matchup in this one.

First on the bump will be Reese Olson. The Tigers righty carried a 2.89 ERA into action with 54 strikeouts in 53.0 innings. Those numbers might seem a little small as he missed over a month with a finger injury. But not to worry, he returned to action last week and looked like his old self. He threw 4.1 innings and allowed just one run (in a solo dinger), striking out three in the process.

The surface numbers aren’t quite as good for Zack Littell, who will be throwing the bottom of the first. He has a respectable 3.50 ERA with a little less swing and miss stuff in there. However, he has thrown three straight games in which he held his opponents to one run. Over those 18 innings his ERA was a meager 1.50, which gives me the faith I need to get in on this one.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for July 9: No (-130)

Pittsburgh Pirates vs. Kansas City Royals

First Pitch – 7:40 pm EST
kauffman Stadium – Kansas City, MO
Broadcast – MLB TV

We cashed on this NRFI on Tuesday and are ready to double down on it. One of the big reasons is just how bad these two have been scoring runs early. The Royals are in the bottom third of the league in terms of first inning scoring – 0.44 runs per game. The Pirates make that look potent, as they are currently 29th in the majors in that same category (0.34 per game). They are both even worse across the game, where they are the two lowest ranked teams in MLB.

In addition to fading the bats, I’m tailing these two pitchers. Kris Bubic has honors and he is rocking a 2.38 ERA on the season. The lefty has 107 strikeouts in just 103.0 innings – numbers that got him an invite to Atlanta for the All-Star Game next week. I can’t imagine him struggling with the Pirates.

Bailey Falter is not nearly as sharp, but he has been good for Pittsburgh. He has a 3.69 ERA on the year and has held all of his last five opponents to three runs or fewer. If there is another set of bats he can keep quiet, they are in the Kansas City dugout.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for July 9: No (-125)
