MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – June 29

Philadlphia Phillies vs. Atlanta Braves

First Pitch – 1:35 pm EST
Truist Park – Atlanta, GA
Broadcast – MLB TV

In the top of the first, Spencer Strider will toe the rubber. While he had a bit of a rough start, he’s settled into the old version of himself in the last few starts. He has allowed just four earned runs over his last three starts (17.0 innings), and he’s fanned 29 batters in that time. Those numbers would give me faith that he could shut down just about anyone, but I have even more faith against this Phillies squad. They’ve scored one run or less in four of their last five games, and Spencer Strider is the right guy to keep that going.

The bottom of the inning shouldn’t be much of a sweat either. Sean Murphy gave them a boost on Friday with a grand slam in a 6-1 win, but in the three games prior they had been pressed for runs. They scored just three total runs in the three games prior, which includes a pair of shutouts. Scoring won’t likely get much easier with Ranger Suarez on the bump. Over ten starts this year, the Phillies lefty has a 2.08 ERA with 59 strikeouts in just 65.0 innings. He’s also riding back-to-back one run performances and the Braves are likely to break that trend.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for June 29: No (-135)

Tampa Bay Rays vs. Baltimore Orioles

First Pitch – 1:35 pm EST
Camden Yards – Baltimore, MD
Broadcast –MLB TV

The Rays are a solid hitting team, but I’m backing the NRFI in this one for two reasons. The first is that while they are a good hitting team, they struggle in the first inning. They come in right around league average when it comes to scoring in the first inning. The second reason is that Dean Kramer is on the bump for Baltimore and he’s been solid lately. In each of his last two outings, he’s held his opponents to just one run. That includes 5.2 innings against the Yankees with seven strikeouts.

The bottom of inning sees Baltimore come to the plate, which is always a good thing for NRFI plays. They rank 26th in the majors when it comes to first inning runs. Now they’ll try to reverse that trend against Taj Bradley. He’s held two of his last three opponents scoreless. The only other game in the last three saw him get hammered by these same Orioles. However, that was still after posting a near perfect first inning.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for June 29: No (+100)
