The Aggies have not given anyone much reason to back them. The guys called the offense bad, pointed out that plenty of teams have blown A&M out, and remembered being optimistic about Mike Elko going into the season. The recent result was a shutout of The Citadel, which drew a fair question on air about why A&M was playing The Citadel at all. The answer offered: a tune-up before Alabama.

The bet rests on time and money. Elko gets two weeks to prepare for Bama, and the roster A&M paid for still carries a lot of talent. More than two touchdowns is a big number to hand a team like that, and as the case went on air, a coach in Elko’s spot can’t keep getting blown out every week at A&M and keep his job.

The defense did the rest of the work. The guys had A&M 10th in the nation in pass defense and not penalized much, and noted Alabama is coming off a brutal loss. Ryan said they might be “biting on the peanut butter on the trap,” then took the points anyway, calling it a bad schematic matchup: the weak spot in the A&M defense has been stopping the run, and the guys don’t see Alabama as a juggernaut on the ground.
