MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – May 4

Boston Red Sox vs. Detroit Tigers

First Pitch – 6:40 pm EST
Comerica Park – Detroit, MI
Broadcast – MLB TV

The first of our NRFI selections comes to us from Detroit, where the back-to-back reigning AL Cy Young winner is on the bump. Tarik Skubal has been just about his usual self this season and gets the added treat of facing the Red Sox. While the Red Sox had a little burst upon firing the entire hitting side of their coaching staff, they have fallen on hard times again. They now rank 27th in the league in runs per game and are dead last in first inning scoring.

To close out our first NRFI, we’ll trust the mustachioed Payton Tolle. Just two starts into his season, he’s rocking a 3.38 ERA with 15 strikeouts in just 10.2 innings. He hasn’t given up a first or second inning run all year. It’s really the second time through where he gets hit. Detroit may be solidly in the middle of the pack in terms of hitting, which should give him the chance to get us three quick outs.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for May 4: No (-185)

Chicago White Sox vs. Los Angeles Angels

First Pitch – 9:38 pm EST
Angel Stadium – Anaheim, CA
Broadcast – MLB TV

Closing out the NRFIs for Monday is Jose Soriano. There may not be a pitcher in the league who has looked as good as he has in the early going. Through six starts, he’s logged 42.2 innings and fanned 49. As good as his strikeout numbers have been, they have nothing on his ERA, which currently sits at 0.84. I’d take him in an NRFI against just about anyone in the league at this point, but it doesn’t hurt that the White Sox are in the bottom third of the league in terms of scoring.

In the bottom of the first, we have another great situation. Davis Martin has been shoving for the southsiders. His ERA is just 1.95 and he’s struck out at least seven batters in back-to-back starts. The Angels may be a touch better with the bats than the White Sox, but they aren’t blowing anyone’s socks off. They sit in the middle of the pack in most offensive categories.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for May 4: No (-140)
