MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – July 2
Milwaukee Brewers vs. New York Mets
First Pitch – 1:10 pm EST
Citi Field – Queens, NY
Broadcast –MLB TV
For our first NRFI, we look at a couple of powerful offenses in game one of a double headers. Both teams rank in the top half of the league when it comes to run scoring. Paradoxically, they are both in the bottom half of the league when it comes to scoring in the first inning, which should help us in this one.
The pitching matchup should help as well. The Mets send out Clay Holmes to do the honors in this one. He’s been stellar as a member of their starting rotation. He’s sporting a 2.97 ERA heading into Tuesday’s action and has been even sharper lately. In his last four starts, he’s only allowed more than one earned run one time.
The bottom of the inning has a hot pitcher on the bump as well. Freddy Peralta gets the ball to close out this NRFI. His ERA sits at just 2.90 with 98 strikeouts in just 93.0 innings. He also has a solid history keeping the Mets quiet. In three career starts against New York, he has a 2.30 ERA with 20 strikeouts in 17.1 innings.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for July 2: No (-115)
Chicago White Sox vs. Los Angeles Dodgers
First Pitch – 10:10 pm EST
Dodger Stadium – Los Angeles, CA
Broadcast –MLB TV
An NRFI play with the White Sox swinging the bats is never much of a sweat. They’re 29th in the majors in terms of run scoring with just 3.39 per game. They’re also on a brutal run where they’ve only put up eight runs in their last four games. Now they’ll face Clayton Kershaw – who maybe isn’t back to his Cy Young form, but has been quite good. He’s sporting a 3.03 ERA heading into action on Wednesday. He also allowed just four earned runs in his last four starts (23.0 innings). While his stikeout stuff is a bit short of what we’d hope for, it should still be good enough to get us a blank first inning.
The Dodgers swinging the bats is a bit scarier when it comes to playing an NRFI. There’s no doubt that they’re one of the best offenses in the league. However, Chicago is smartly coming with a left-handed opener to try to keep the lefties at the top of this order quiet. Brandon Eisert gets the ball after posting a 3.18 ERA in June. Shohei Ohtani is simply not hitting dingers against lefties. He is homering once every 8.9 at bats against righties, but only once every 19.7 at bats against lefites. Similar could be said for Freddie Freeman, who is only hitting .254 against lefties this year – despite being a .308 hitter on the year.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for July 2: No (-105)
