MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – March 31
Texas Rangers vs. Cincinnati Reds
First Pitch – 6:40 pm EST
Great American Ball Park – Cincinnati, OH
Broadcast – MLB TV
The top half of the inning sees the Rangers get their hacks agianst the Reds newest arm, Brady Singer. The former Royal came out of the gates firing last year before trailing off late in the season. In his season debut (also on March 31st), he threw seven scoreless innings with ten strikeouts. A fully rested and ramped up version of him should return to something similar to that. Plus, he’ll get a Rangers team that has not been hitting well out of the gate. They’ve scored just 13 runs in the first four games this year and Singer should help keep that number down.
The bottom half of the first has a pitcher with not nearly as much of a track record. Kumar Rocker gets his start shortly after his Vandy Boys teammate Jack Leiter – who got us a NRFI earlier in the week. He looked sharp during Spring Training and earned a shot in this rotation. Now he’ll get a Reds team that is also not having an easy time with the bats. They’ve scored just 14 runs in the four games they’ve played and should be slow to start again here.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for March 31: No (-125)
San Francisco Giants vs. Houston Astros
First Pitch – 8:10 pm EST
Daikin Park – Houston, TX
Broadcast – MLB TV
Despite being the fourth games for these two teams, we’re still getting a phenomenal pitching matchup on Monday.
In the top of the first, Rionel Blanco gets the nod. He posted a 2.80 ERA last season with 166 strikeouts in 167.1 innings. Those numbers are ones you simply don’t see all that much at the end of a rotation. He’ll get a Giants team that has scored just 12 runs all year and hasn’t managed to put one across in the first inning yet this season. That has all the makings of a good start for an NRFI.
In the bottom half of the first, we get the first look at Jordan Hicks in 2025. He was hot out of the gate last year before falling apart due to throwing too many innings. Through April, he carried a 1.58 ERA and only allowed one dinger in 34.0 innings. Houston has yet to score a first inning run and has just six total runs in three games. I have to imagine that Hicks will be able to keep them quiet early on here.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for March 31: No (-135)
