NBA First Scorer Props – November 29
New Orleans Pelicans vs. Memphis Grizzlies
Tipoff – 5:00 pm EST
FedExForum – Memphis, TN
Broadcast – NBA TV
After the holiday layoff, we return to a game with a nice advantage for us. The Grizzlies are the second best team in the league on the tip. Since coming back from injury, Jaren Jackson Jr. has won nine of the ten tips that he’s taken. On the other side, the Pelicans have won just 26.3% of their tips, which puts them in 27th in the NBA. While this with the fact that tip winners get nearly two-thirds of the first buckets should be enough to take someone on Memphis, there are even more reasons to like them. They have a 13.4% advantage over the Pelicans when it comes to their conversions.
There are a lot of guys on this Grizzlies team that have gotten on the board for a first bucket. However, just one is the guy firing off all the early shots as of late. Desmond Bane has been letting things fly early pretty consistently. He’s taken the first shot in two of the last three games. I imagine he’ll come out shooting yet again, which basically gives you a five-to-one bet as to whether or not he’ll make his first shot. That’s got a lot of value on it.
First Scorer Bet for November 29: Desmond Bane (+500)
Oklahoma City Thunder vs. Los Angeles Lakers
Tipoff – 10:00 pm EST
crypto.com Arena – Los Angeles, CA
Broadcast – ESPN
If you look at the surface stats on this one, you might find yourself leaning to a play on the Thunder. They’ve been a touch better than the Lakers in pretty much all the metrics this season. However, what this ignores is just how bad they’ve been on the early game numbers since losing Chet Holmgren. They’ve won just three of the eight tipoffs they’ve seen since his departure. Two of those belong to Isaiah Hartenstein, who will likely take the tip today. Although that might be a positive sign, it would appear to be a bit of a fluke being as he carried a 24.0% tip win average last season.
While Anthony Davis and LeBron James are the big names in Los Angeles, there is a down ballot choice I like here. Austin Reaves has been getting plenty of early looks for them and has some inflated odds. At over 9-to-1, we’re seeing him take one of their first three shots in three of his last four games. One of those was also the Lakers first shot in that game. With that kind of early volume, this is the spot to strike.
First Scorer Bet for November 29: Austin Reaves (+950)
