MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – October 14

New York Mets vs. Los Angeles Dodgers

First Pitch – 4:08 pm EST
Dodger Stadium – Los Angeles, California
Broadcast – FOX

At the moment, we don’t know who is getting the start for the Dodgers, but it almost doesn’t matter. They’ll sent out a slew of different guys in the last 33 innings, and not a single runs has been scored. That streak is borderline unheard of at any stage of the season, never mind the postseason. It’ll help matters that the top of the Mets order looked pretty bad in game one. The top five hitters went a combined 0-for-17 at the dish with a combined seven strikeouts. That should be a nice easy start up to the NRFI.

In the bottom of the inning, we’ll have to rely a bit more on the pitching situation. While the Dodgers are hot, I do like Sean Manaea in this spot. He’s been solid as of late with just three earned runs given up in his two starts during this postseason. He’s also been better than average against the top four guys in this Dodgers lineup. If that’s not enough, we can also cite his positive career numbers against the Dodgers. He is undefeated in his last five appearances against them with just a 3.05 ERA. I think he should be able to get us the three outs that we need.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for October 14: No (-115)

Cleveland Guardians vs. New York Yankees

First Pitch – 7:38 pm EST
Yankee Stadium – Bronx, New York
Broadcast – TBS

The starts have been sporatic for Alex Cobb this season, but the injuries have not been anything structurally that would worry us. He missed time with a broken finger nail and had another IL stint with a blister. So while they have some space in between them, he’s looked quite good in his last three starts. Over 14.2 innings, he maintained a 1.84 ERA with 11 strikeouts. Perhaps most importantly about those outings is that he didn’t allow a single home run. While I would worry about this Yankees offense, I think he should be sharp enough to keep them in the park.

Carlos Rodon got absolutely shelled by the Royals in his lone postseason start. That might be a cause for concern for those looking for an NRFI, but I still believe that was just a blip on the radar. He was really solid to close out the season. He held a 2.20 ERA through the month of September and not once allowed more than two earned runs. He also only allowed one first inning run in that span and that was again to the Royals. Just not seeing Kansas City here should do it for me, Rodon and this NRFI.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for October 14: No (-125)
