MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – September 5
Houston Astros vs. Cincinnati Reds
First Pitch – 1:10 pm EST
Great American Ball Park – Cincinnati, Ohio
Broadcast – ESPN+
The top of the first will be a bit of a sweat. Sure, the Astros are a touch worse offensively than they usually are – ranking 12th in runs scored on the year – but the Reds will be sending a rookie to the bump. Still, I’m going to put my faith in Rhett Lowder. I loved his looks at Wake Forest when he was in college. He appeared even then to have the makeup of a legit MLB starter. Now, just one start into his MLB career, that seems all the more true. He held the Brewers, a solid hitting team, scoreless over the first three innings of that start. I expect that he can get us through the first against this squad.
The bottom of the inning should be a touch easier to finish off. Hunter Brown gets the ball for the Astros against this average looking Reds attack. Brown has been lights out as of late. In his last three starts (19.2 innings), he’s held his opponents to just two runs. His August, in general, was sensational. He carried a 1.45 ERA in the month and was undefeated in the process. That should be the kind of roll we need to close out this NRFI.

Minnesota Twins vs. Tampa Bay Rays
First Pitch – 1:10 pm EST
Tropicana Field – St. Petersburg, Florida
Broadcast – MLB TV
The Twins have been a top ten team in most offensive categories for the bulk of the year. However, I like Taj Bradley in a bounceback spot to get this NRFI started right. Although he had a really brutal August, his ERA is just peaking above 4.00. He’s also got prior success this year against the Twins lineup. Back in June, he threw 6.0 innings and allowed just two runs. More importantly, he cruised early in that game to get an NRFI there as well.
The Rays, on the other hand, are not a top ten team in any meaningful offensive category. In fact, they rank 28th in runs scored this year and seem to be trending in the wrong direction. Pablo Lopez isn’t trending in the wrong direction and should be able to wrap this one up for us. He hasn’t allowed a single run in any of his last three starts (20.2 innings). I expect that to continue for at least one more inning here.
