MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – September 3

Minnesota Twins vs. Tampa Bay Rays

First Pitch – 6:50 pm EST
Tropicana Field – St. Petersburg, Florida
Broadcast – MLB TV

The Twins are a decent hitting team – hovering around the top ten in most offensive categories – but I’m going to trust Jeffery Springs here to take the NRFI for us. He has looked good as of late. He has held his last four opponents to just five runs total. More impressive is that his strikeout numbers have really played up in that time. He fanned 27 in those four appearances while logging just 18.1 innings. That’s good for nearly 14 strikeouts per nine innings. That should help him keep Twins off the bags and that frame at zero.

To close out our first NRFI, we’re going to lean on David Festa. He rocked a 3.13 ERA through the month of August while striking out 30 in just 23.0 innings. While his season numbers are not nearly as pretty, I really like how he’s coming on late. Then you add in the Rays side of things. They rank 28th in run scoring this year and haven’t been picking those numbers up at all. They’re also below average at scoring in the first. As a result, we’ll trust him to get us at least three outs to cash this one.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for September 3: No (-135)

Pittsburgh Pirates vs. Chicago Cubs

First Pitch – 7:40 pm EST
Wrigley Field – Chicago, Illinois
Broadcast – MLB TV

This was a game we hit on Monday for an NRFI and we’re back it with an even better pitching matchup.

The top of the first will see Justin Steele hit the bump trying to limit these Pirates. Not only did the Pirates fail to score in the first on Monday, but they are 29th in the league in that category – just a touch ahead of the brutal White Sox lineup. Now they’ll face Steele, who has held his last two opponents to two runs (12.0 innings) dropping his season ERA to just 3.09. In those two outings, he averaged 8 strikeouts and should get even more here. As a result, I have tons of confidence in the NRFI.

Maybe the Cubs are a touch better of a hitting team than the Pirates, but they’ll get their second Pirates rookie in as many days. After Jared Jones breezed through the early innings on Monday, I don’t have any fear that Paul Skenes will do the same on Tuesday. He had a rough outing by his standards last time against the Cubs, but with a 2.23 ERA on the year, I like him to rebound in a big way here. Plus, all we need is three outs.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for September 3: No (TBD)
