MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – August 21
Chicago White Sox vs. San Francisco Giants
First Pitch – 3:45 pm EST
Oracle Park – San Francisco, California
Broadcast – MLB TV
There isn’t much less of a sweat than the top of the first in this NRFI. The Giants send out Logan Webb with his 3.17 ERA against the worst offense in the majors. While that ERA is already good enough to support Webb, it’s worth mentioning that he’s been better as of late. In his last four starts (29.1 innings), he’s allowed just two earned runs. Although those four game haven’t come against the hottest bats in the league, this one won’t either.
For the bottom half of the first, Garrett Crochet heads to the bump for the Southsiders. Crochet has been wildly reduced in output as the White Sox keep pulling him after three or four innings. That shouldn’t affect us at all as akll we’re looking for here is three outs. If his last start against the Astros is any indications he should breeze to it. He threw the prescribed 4.0 innings in that start while only allowing one run with nine strikeouts. The Giants are a touch worse than the Astros offensively this year, which gives me all the confidence I need here.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for August 21: No (-160)
Cincinnati Reds vs. Toronto Blue Jays

The Reds are a middle of the pack team when it comes to scoring runs. However, they have been far worse at scoring in the first inning, They currently rank 24th in the majors in scoring runs in the first innings. That should help Yariel Rodriguez, who has been up and down as of late. Although his last outing with the Cubs was a bit of an alarm bell, his two starts prior instill confidence that he can get things done here. On a larger scale, his ERA this year is under 4.00 and he’s striking out more than one an inning – both good indicators for us here.
Toronto has been on the uptick with their run scoring, but they are still in the bottom third of MLB. That’s something I expect to be a cake walk for Nick Martinez. Since coming back into the rotation in early August, he’s logged three starts. In those three starts, he’s gone 18.0 innings and allowed just three earned runs. Two of those starts come against the solid bats of the Royals and the Brewers. If he was able to keep those teams at bay, he’ll finish off our NRFI here without issue.
