MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – July 12
Los Angeles Dodgers vs. Detroit Tigers
First Pitch – 6:40 pm EST
Comerica Park – Detroit, Michigan
Broadcast – MLB TV
While the Dodgers are a top five team in terms of any meaningful hitting metric, I still like them to get blanked in the first inning here. Tarik Skubal has been outstanding this year. He has 10 wins and a 2.37 ERA entering action on Friday. He’s coming off an outing where he held Cincinnati to just one run in 7.0 innings – adding 13 strikeouts on the way. Six times this year, he’s pitched better than that and managed to shutout his opponents. In addition, he’s struck out at least seven batters in four straight games, which includes games against the Phillies and the Braves. That will help matters if the Dodgers do manage some early runners.
The surface stats of James Paxton may not be as good, but he’s working on a much easier task. The Tigers rank 19th in MLB in run scoring and 17th in first inning runs. Paxton has been good enough lately to limit a squad like that. While he did get roughed up by the Giants two starts ago, it was the only time in the last five games that he allowed more than two runs. He held the Brewers to just two earned last start and they’re a far better hitting team than the Tigers.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for July 12: No (TBD)
Seattle MAriners vs. Los Angeles Angels
First Pitch – 9:38 pm EST
Angel Stadium – Los Angeles, California
Broadcast – MLB TV
Speaking of pitchers who have been great lately, Tyler Anderson will be tasked with starting our NRFI on the right foot. He’s allowed three or less runs in four of his last five starts. He’s coming off eight scoreless innings against the Cubs where he struck out ten. The Mariners are the only team in the league to average more than ten strikeouts per game. They’re also 27th in the majors in run scoring. Anderson shouldn’t have an issue keeping them at bay.
The bottom half of the first will see the return of Bryan Woo. Before he went out with a hamstring injury, he was putting together an All-Star type of season. He has a 1.77 ERA thus far and hasn’t allowed more than three runs in a game all year. The Angels haven’t been particularly hot with the bats either. They are coming off a game Thursday where they were shutout while managing just five hits. Over the last five games, they’ve scored only 15 runs (3.0 per game). A date with Woo shouldn’t change the trajectory of that.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for July 12: No (-135)
