MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – July 6
Tampa Bay Rays vs. Texas Rangers
First Pitch – 4:05 pm EST
Globe Life Field – Arlington, Texas
Broadcast – MLB TV
In the top half of the first, we’re going to lean on the arm of Andrey Heaney to get the NRFI started right against the Rays. Tampa Bay has been a major disappointment this year at the plate. They rank 24th in runs scored, which is largely due to the fact that they aren’t hitting any home runs. They rank 26th in the league in long balls. Now they’ll face Andrew Heaney, who has been great for the Rangers.
Heaney’s season long ERA might leave a bit to be desired (4.04 going into Saturday), but the trajectory of his numbers is good. He’s got back-to-back games with just two runs allowed. In those 12.0 innings pitched, he’s stuck out 14 while only allowing a single home run. He’s also only walked two batters in that stretch. With as good as he’s been and as limited as the Rays have been, this should be an easy start for us.
The bottom half of the inning should be a little more difficult. However, it is worth noting that the Rangers are not the same team they were last year. They currently rank 17th in the league in runs scored. They’ll have to work through Taj Bradley, who has been out of his mind in the month of June. In his last five starts (29.0 innings), he only allowed four earned runs and managed to strike out 40. If he keeps on that track, we should cash this NRFI with no issue.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for July 6: No (-115)
Toronto Blue Jays vs. Seattle Mariners
First Pitch – 4:10 pm EST
T-Mobile Park – Seattle, Washington
Broadcast – MLB TV
Emerson Hancock returns from the minors to help us get this NRFI started. While some may worry about having someone whose last two starts were on the farm protecting their first inning, there is a lot to like about what I’ve seen from Hancock. Notably, he held major league opponents to two or less earned runs in five of his last six starts. In fact, if you throw out the one start in which the Brewers got to him for eight runs, his ERA would be 2.70 on the season. Also, in the 9.1 innings he threw in the minors since his last start in the bigs, he hasn’t allowed a single run.
Things will be fairly easy for Hancock as well facing this sputtering Blue Jays lineup. They rank 26th in the majors in scoring and have been even worse lately. They’ve scored just six runs during their current three-game losing streak.
If you’re looking for another pitcher who has numbers that don’t reflect how good they’ve been, look no futher than Yariel Rodriguez. Discounting the one time the Guardians knocked him out in the second inning, he’d be sporting a 3.27 ERA on the season. In the limited number of starts he’s had, he’s seen a wild level of competition too. In addition to facing the Guardians, he’s faced the Astros, Padres, Rockies and the Royals twice. All of those teams with the exception of the Rockies are above average offenses. He’s coming off a 6.2 inning start against the aforementioned Astros, who he held to one run with six strikeouts. The Mariners lead the league in strikeouts per game and that should give him some outs here even if he gets into trouble.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for July 6: No (-115)
