Underdog Fantasy MLB Daily Pick ‘Em Plays – July 4

Yordan Alvarez – Higher than 1.5 Total Bases

Fresh off of being named the American League’s starting DH for the All-Star Game, I like Alvarez to keep things rolling. He’s had an extra-base hit in all three games in July so far. He also has beat this projection in six of his last seven games. That would be good enough to get in on this projection, but then there’s the Chris Bassitt of it all.

Despite throwing really well this season, Bassitt has struggled with Alvarez historically. The two have faced off 20 times. In that span, Alvarez is 8-for18 (.444) with seven of those hits going for extra bases. Even scarier is the face that five of those seven extra-base hits left the park, leading to a 1.333 slugging percentage.

Julio Rodriguez – Lower than 0.5 Total Bases

Rodriguez has been real cold lately, and that’s even by the standards for how bad this year has been for him. He’s currently hitting .244 with just seven home runs, which is a huge step back for him. However, he’s been far worse in the last nine games. Over that stretch, he has just three hits and nine strikeouts. That yields a 0.81 batting average for that group of games. None of those hits have been for extra bases either, so the slugging is 0.81 as well. When you pair that with the fact that he’s just 1-for-6 lifetime against Thursday’s starter Corbin Burnes, it feels like this is a good spot.

Jackson Merrill – Higher than 1.5 Total Bases

The barely 21-year old rookie has been tearing things up lately. He’s beaten this projection in four of his last five games and each was by a wide margin. In those five games, he has a total of 17 total bases (which comes out to 3.4 per game). He finished off June hitting .320 with 16 extra base hits including 7 home runs. I like his chances to have a big day today too as Max Scherzer tries to settle in.
