MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – July 2
Detoit Tigers vs. Minnesota Twins
First Pitch – 7:40 pm EST
Target Field – Minneapolis, Minnesota
Broadcast – MLB TV
The Tigers offense is nothing to write home about. They’re in the bottom third of run scoring and aren’t much better when it comes to scoring in the first inning. They’re also in the bottom third of the league when it comes to striking out. That should help Simeon Woods Richardson keep things quiet early – not that he needs it all that much. He’s been strong for the Twins so far this year. He carries a 3.41 ERA into Tuesday’s action. He’s held his opponents to three or less runs in seven of his last eight starts.
The offense of the Twins if far more worrisome. They rank 8th in runs per game and 10th in first inning runs – both of which aren’t really what we’re looking for when it comes to an NRFI spot. However, they have quite a tall task in front of them with Tarik Skubal on the bump. He’s coming off an outing in which he held the Phillies potent offense scoreless over seven innings, notching seven strikeouts in the process. The Twins may be a strong hitting squad, but it shouldn’t be anything Skubal can’t handle for us here.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for July 2: No (-140)
San Diego Padres vs. Texas Rangers
First Pitch – 8:05 pm EST
Globe Life Field – Arlington, Texas
Broadcast – MLB TV
This game features a pair of offenses that have underperformed this year so far. Not only that, they’ll be facing each other’s best starter in the process. That’s a perfect recipe for a NRFI on Tuesday.
For the Padres, that opposing arm is Nathan Eovaldi. He got roughed up a bit in his last start, but has held opponents to two or less runs in six of his last eight starts. That includes limiting the Royals and Diamondbacks – teams that are comparable to the numbers the Padres have put up. The Padres are also coming off a game where they were held to five scoreless by an opposing starter. That starter was Josh Winckowski from the Red Sox, who doesn’t exactly have the same stuff as Eovaldi.
The Rangers’ foe for Tuesday is Dylan Cease, as well as their own 18th ranked scoring offense. Cease exited June with three quality starts in his five outings. He’s coming off of seven shutout innings against the Nationals, who have virtually the same run scoring numbers as Texas (4.14 compared to 4.25). On top of that, the Rangers just snapped a six-game losing streak that saw them score less than three runs a game during it.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for July 2: No (-135)
