MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – June 29
Pittsburgh Pirates vs. Atlanta Braves
First Pitch – 4:10 pm EST
Truist Park – Atlanta, Georgia
Broadcast – MLB TV
The top half of the inning should be pretty simple in this one. Max Fried takes the mound and an NRFI is pretty much in play everytime he’s involved. He carries a 3.00 ERA into Saturday’s action. He’s allowed just one earned run in each of his last two starts, which were against the Yankees and Tigers – at least one of which is a far better offense than Pittsburgh.
The Pirates haven’t been all that strong with the bats this year. They’re in the bottom third in run scoring this year and are a touch worse in the first inning. They rank 24th in the majors in first inning runs and the trend has been downward for them in that category. When you combine that with Fried’s recent dominance, this should be a walk in the park.
The bottom half of the inning may be a little sweatier due to the bats of the Braves, but these are largely not the same Braves that we’ve feared for years. Ronald Acuna and Michael Harris are both injured, leaving the leadoff spot to Jarred Kelenic. The lineup led by him failed to score against the lowly White Sox on Thursday in a game started by Chad Kuhl. Now they’ll face young, flamethrower Paul Skenes, who has just a 2.14 ERA.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for June 29: No (-150)
Houston Astros vs. New York Mets
First Pitch – 4:10 pm EST
Citi Field – Queens, New York
Broadcast – MLB TV
The Mets will tote out Tylor Megill to the bump on Saturday. While he had a rough outing last time out against the Cubs, he’s looked pretty good this season. That game with the Cubs was the first time he had allowed more than four runs in a start and he’s gone over three just twice all year. That includes a seven-inning scoreless start against the Dodgers. The Astros aren’t the worst offense in the league, but they’re a far cry from where they’ve been recently. They rank in the middle of the pack in terms of run scoring.
On the other side, the Mets have been hot as of late, but they’re still not scoring much in the first inning. They average less than half of a run per first inning, which puts them in the middle of the majors. Facing Framber Valdez likely won’t help matters. He has five quality starts in his last six outings. He’s also held three of his last five opponents to just one run. I expect him to be able to get us through at least three outs to help this cash.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for June 29: No (-125)
