MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – June 28
Washington Nationals vs. Tampa Bay Rays
First Pitch – 6:50 pm EST
Tropicana Field – St. Petersburg, Florida
Broadcast – MLB TV
In the top of the first, the Nationals will look to crack Zach Eflin. Eflin has been alright both this season and as of late. He has a 4.20 ERA and has allowed, on average, three runs per game over the last three games. While that isn’t usually the kind of arm I’m looking to back in NRFI plays, the Nationals are a team I always try to track down.
The Nationals are the worst in the majors at scoring in the first inning. They average just 0.23 runs per first inning and are scoring in the first inning of just 13.75% of games. On top of that, they haven’t scored in the first inning of their last nine games.
Mitchell Parker will look to take the NRFI home for us. He did get roughed up a bit in Colorado last start, but we can blame that on the elevation. Even then, he still had eight strikeouts in that trip to Coors Field. Prior to that, he had been three straight starts with two or less runs allowed. Tampa Bay is in the bottom third of the league in both runs and first inning runs, so he should find his footing agian.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for June 28: No (-135)
New York Yankees vs. Toronto Blue Jays
First Pitch – 7:07 pm EST
Rogers Centre – Toronto, Ontario
Broadcast – MLB TV
Toronto is another team who has been pretty bad when it comes to scoring runs early – or at all for that matter. They are both 26th in the majors in runs scored in the first inning and runs scored in general. Getting Marcus Stroman on the hill opposing them isn’t going to help matters for them. He carries a 3.15 ERA in Friday’s contest and has been facing good hitting teams as of late. This will be a reprieve for him.
The Yankees are a bit more tricky to keep quiet. They have a top five offence in the league and Aaron Judge is smashing home runs at an alarming rate. It’ll help to an extent that they are on the road in Toronto, which has a league average park factor. Yusei Kikuchi might help matters a bit as well. While he got touched up a bit by the Guardians last outing, he’s been decent as of late. On top of that, the Yankees hit a touch worse against lefties – 17 points of batting average lower and 66 of slugging percentage.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for June 28: No (-110)
