MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – June 23
Chicago White Sox vs. Detroit Tigers
First Pitch – 1:40 pm EST
Comerica Park – Detroit, Michigan
Broadcast – MLB TV
If you’re someone who pays a lot of attention to pitcher win-loss records, you might see Reece Olson’s numbers and get scared off. His 1-8 record isn’t exacly instilling confidence in anyone’s NRFI play. However, I don’t think it should be scaring us off at all. For one, he’s facing the White Sox, who are dead last in the league in runs (just 3.09 per game). Also, he’s been solid on the mound this year.
Despite all of the losses, he has just a 3.39 ERA this year. He’s been roughed up a few times this month, but he’s coming off a May where he gave up just two earned runs in 28.0 innings pitched (0.64 ERA). He also got himself right with his last start against Atlanta. He held the Braves scoreless through six innings, striking out four in the process. The White Sox should be of no concern to him.
There haven’t been many bright spots for the White Sox this season. It’s hard to have any when your team is 21-57. With that being said, you just might qualify Jonathan Cannon as a bright spot. Over his last three appearances, he’s allowed just one earned run (18.2 innings) – bringing his season ERA down to 3.34. He held the Astros scoreless for 8.2 innings last time out. The Tigers are in the bottom third of the league in runs scored, so he should be able to keep them quiet, too.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for June 23: No (-120)
Minnesota Twins vs. Oakland Athletics
First Pitch – 4:07 pm EST
Oakland Coliseum – Oakland, California
Broadcast – MLB TV
Minnesota is 8th in the majors in runs scored and runs scored in the first inning. Yet here I am, still on the NRFI for their game with the lowly Athletics. The reason? I actually trust the arm of Oakland’s starter and feel like anyone can shut down the Athletics.
Hogan Harris might not be a name a ton of people know, but hes been fantastic lately. On the season, he’s carrying a 2.37 ERA into Sunday’s action. Since transitioning to a starting role, he’s allowed only four earned runs in four starts (21.2 innings pitched). He held Kansas City, who is a touch better offensively than the Twins, to just one earned over five in his last start. With that being said, I think he can get us through the first.
In the bottom half of the inning, Pablo Lopez should hold down the fort. He perhaps hasn’t been what the Twins were hoping for when they traded Luis Arraez for him, but it’s not like the Athletics are going to rip him up. They’re 28th in the majors in scoring runs and 27th in first-inning runs.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for June 23: No (-140)
