MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – June 20
Arizona Diamondbacks vs. Washington Nationals
First Pitch – 1:05 pm EST
Nationals Park – Washington, DC
Broadcast – MLB TV
The Nationals are one of my favorite teams to circle for an NRFI when MacKenzie Gore is on the bump. Largely because he’s been really good for Washington, and regardless of who is on the other side, the Nationals will have trouble scoring.
On the year, the Nationals are the worst team at scoring runs in the first inning. They’re averaging just 0.25 runs per game in the first inning, which is less than a third of some of the top teams in the league. They also have been struggling to score runs lately. Despite winning three of their last four, they have only scored 10 total runs in those games. Ryne Nelson will be tasked with keeping it that way. While he isn’t the name you usually seek for NRFIs, he had a solid start against another bad hitting team in the White Sox last time out (6.0 innings, 1 ER, 8 Ks).
The offense of the Diamondbacks is a lot scarier to look at. They’re near the top of the league in all the major statistics when it comes to scoring runs. However, I’m putting my faith in Gore, who has been lights out as of late. Over his last two starts, he has allowed just two earned runs (12.0 innings). More importantly, he’s ramped up the strikeouts to get himself out of jams. He had 17 over that two-game span.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for June 20: No (-110)
Tampa Bay Rays vs. Minnesota Twins
First Pitch – 1:10 pm EST
Target Field – Minneapolis, Minnesota
Broadcast – ESPN+
In the top half of the inning, Simeon Woods Richardson takes the hill against Tampa Bay. He may not be a hoursehold name around the league yet, but he’s been putting up solid numbers. He put together back-to-back months with a sub-3.00 ERA. Additionally, it’s been over a month since he failed to record at least four strikeouts. While those aren’t Rookie of the Year numbers exactly, it should be enough for me to have faith that he’ll get through the first inning.
The Twins are a little worse offensively, but still around a top ten team in terms of all the major run scoring metrics. Although Zack Littell hasn’t been the killer we might in there defending out NRFI, he did have three straight quality starts going into his last outing. Also, to his benefit, he’s right handed – which gives the Twins a bit of trouble. They have a 36-point dropoff in batting average when facing righties and see a 3% uptick in strikeouts. Combining some of those factors gives me faith that we’ll get three clean outs.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for June 20: No (-110)
