MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – June 16
San Diego Padres vs. New York Mets
First Pitch – 1:40 pm EST
Citi Field – Queens, New York
Broadcast – MLB TV
There’s not a terrible lot to say about either of these offenses. Both sit roughly in the middle of the pack in run scoring – 11th for the Padres and 14th for the Mets. Neither has blown the doors off in this series either with just nine total runs scored in the two games. Now each team will face another uphill battle with a pair of hot pitchers getting the call.
In the top half of the inning it’ll be Tylor Megill. His ERA is just 3.51 on the year and his strikeout numbers have regularly looked impressive. Despite having generally shorter outings, he’s struck out at least seven in three of his last four starts. San Diego isn’t a team that fans a lot, but they did go down on strikes 12 times on Saturday. That fact should help him out of any first inning jams he runs into.
In the bottom half, the Mets get Dylan Cease. Cease has a solid 3.36 ERA, which is really only that high due to some rough outings against good hitting teams. The Phillies got to him once as did the Yankees. Outside of that, nobody is really putting up big numbers on him, so I can’t imagine the Mets being the team to join that group.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for June 16: No (-140)
Chicago White Sox vs. Arizona Diamondbacks
First Pitch – 4:10 pm EST
Chase Field – Phoenix, Arizona
Broadcast – MLB TV
I’m a fan of an NRFI where we’re only going to have to worry about one half of an inning. There’s really not much to worry about in the top half of the first with the White Sox being one of the worst teams in recent history. They’re scoring just 3.03 runs per game, which is a full half of a run behind the next worse team. Jordan Montgomery has been far from good on this season, but if there is a team to help get him right, it’s this one.
In the bottom half, we’re putting a lot of faith in a rookie pitcher. Drew Thorpe has only had one MLB appearance, but the big righty looked great in it. He went five strong and held the Mariners to just one run. More importantly he came out of the gate strong. In the first inning he recorded three outs on just 12 pitches and the ball never left the infield. The Diamondbacks are a slightly better hitting team, but their lack of familiarity with him should play up early in the game.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for June 16: No (+100)
