Underdog Fantasy MLB Daily Pick ‘Em Plays – June 12

Shohei Ohtani – Higher than 1.5 Total Bases

Shohei has cooled off a bit this month – by Shohei standards, at least. He still has hits in seven of his nine games in June and has two homers and a double to show for his efforts, too. That’s enough to get me tempted by this projection here, but what gets me over the top is the pitching matchup. Ohtani gets to face Jon Gray, who he has faced ten times in his career. He’s 4-for-10 against Gray, and three of those hits have gone for extra bases, two of them being home runs. I feel like one swing from Ohtani should handle this number.

Pete Alonso – Higher than 1.5 Total Bases

Pete Alonso is another guy who hasn’t exactly been hot lately but who I’m down with, thanks to a good pitching matchup. Braxton Garrett has been bad in June so far. He’s thrown just 2.2 innings and allowed five earned runs. Righties are hitting him especially hard, with their slugging percentage just short of .400. Plus, Alonso has a good history against him personally. He’s 7-for-18 career (.389) and has a pair of dingers in there as well.

Spencer Schwellenbach – Higher than 0.5 1st Inning Strikeouts

Spencer Schwellenbach didn’t exactly have the first couple of starts that he wanted. Although each start was fine at the beginning, he fell apart late and wound up taking losses in both contests. However, despite that fact, he is striking out batters at a decent clip. In 9.2 innings, he has nine strikeouts. With him being much better early than he is late, there should be no issue making sure one of these comes in the bottom of the first.
