Underdog Fantasy MLB Daily Pick ‘Em Plays – May 5

Xander Bogaerts – Higher than 1.5 Total Bases

Bogaerts has been on a bit of a hot streak as of late in terms of extra-base hits. He has a double in both games of this series with the Diamondbacks so far. Now, he gets a favorable pitching matchup to make it three straight. Ryne Nelson takes the hill for Arizona, who has faced Bogaerts seven times. The Padres’ second baseman has three hits in those seven at-bats and every single one of them is for extra-bases (a double and two homers).

Bailey Falter – Higher than 0.5 1st Inning Strikeouts

Falter is currently averaging a strikeout per inning over his last three starts. That includes games with Oakland and Milwaukee. Those teams rank in the bottom third of the league, so there might be a tendancy to write off those stats for Falter. However, he’s facing a team that happens to be worse than both of those two.

The Rockies are 29th in MLB in strikeouts. They go down on strikes 10.12 times per game on average and a lot of that is the top of their order. I expect Falter to get at least one early.

Alex Verdugo – Higher than 0.5 Total Bases

Don’t look now, but Verdugo has a seven-game hit streak at the moment. In that span, he has ten hits and raised his batting average from .244 to .270. He also has a good history with Tigers’ starter Tarik Skubal. They’ve faced each other eight times and Verdugo has four hits against him. Only one of those is for extra-bases, but with this projection all we need is a single.
