MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – April 25
Seattle Mariners vs. Texas Rangers
First Pitch – 2:35 pm EST
Globe Life Field – Arlington, Texas
Broadcast – MLB TV
Perhaps Andrew Heaney hasn’t had the best start to the year, but neither has the Mariners’ offense. They’re ranked 24th in runs per game this year at just 3.71. They are not any better early in the game. In fact, they’re a touch worse in that regard – ranking 25th in first inning runs with 0.33 per first inning. So, while they might have a matchup that doesn’t seem awful, the NRFI is still in play with this side of the game.
The other side of the equation I also like, but for the exact opposite reason. Texas’ offense has been sharp, ranking 10th in the league in runs scored. They’re even better in the first inning, where they’re top five with .72 runs per first inning.
However, I don’t like their matchup with Luis Castillo. After three rough outings to start the year, he’s settled in and has allowed just two runs over his last 13.0 innings pitched. He’s struck out 18 in that span and should have no issue getting us the NRFI here.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for April 25: No (-105)
Los Angeles Dodgers vs. Washington Nationals
First Pitch – 4:05 pm EST
Nationals Park – Washington, DC
Broadcast – MLB TV
I love a game with only one side of the equation to sweat out. This one should be a slam dunk on the side of the Nationals hitting against Yoshinobu Yamamoto. In addition to Yamamoto being phenomenal this year, the Nationals are down at the bottom of every indicator we look to here. They’re bottom five in runs scored per game, first inning runs, and YRFI percentage. This is not the pitcher to try to get things right against.
On the other side, I like Mackenzie Gore’s stuff. He’s maintained a 3.60 ERA over this year and that’s facing teams like the Astros and Phillies, who have been hot. The Dodgers have also been taking a while to get going in games. They have just one first inning run over the last four games. With the odds set where they are, it’s worth a dabble to think Gore can shut them down for one inning.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for April 245: No (-115)
