MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – April 23
Boston Red Sox vs. Cleveland Guardians
First Pitch – 6:10 pm EST
Progressive Field – Cleveland, Ohio
Broadcast – NESN
Just six days prior, these two teams squared off in Boston with the exact same pitching matchup. The game ended at 2-0, with neither offense looking that good. Tanner Houck was absolutely lights out. He threw a complete game Maddux (just 94 pitches total). He held the Guardians scoreless over the nine innings. Even if he’s unable to do something like that again, the Guardians have been brutal in the first inning. They are 19th in first inning runs with just 0.45 per game.
The Red Sox offense in last week’s game wasn’t much better. Ben Lively held the Sox to just two runs over five innings. One of those runs came off of a balk, and the other was a solo home run. If you eliminate that solo shot, he, too, was pretty solid. With both of these pitchers having the other team’s number, I love the NRFI here.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for April 23: No (-120)
Chicago White Sox vs. Minnesota Twins
First Pitch – 7:40 pm EST
Target Field – Minneapolis, Minnesota
Broadcast – MLB TV
These two offenses have been awful throughout the year. They rank 28th and 30th, respectively, in the MLB when it comes to runs scored. Their combined per-game average comes in just below 4.5 per game. With the pitching matchup where it is, I don’t expect that to get much better here, either.
Erick Fedde has been solid for the White Sox. He’s held his opponents to two or fewer runs in all but one of his starts this year – and his ERA comes in at 3.10. Pablo Lopez has been similarly good. He’s fanned at least seven in three of his four outings this year. Apart from one ugly outing against Detroit, he’s held opponents to just five runs in 18.2 innings. With the offenses that will oppose them, I can’t imagine they’ll run into much trouble early.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for April 23: No (-125)
