MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – April 20

Los Angeles Angels vs. Cincinnati Reds

First Pitch – 6:40 pm EST
Great American Ball Park – Cincinnati, Ohio
Broadcast – MLB TV

No team in the majors has been worse at scoring runs in the first inning than the Reds. They are averaging just 0.11 runs per game. Their luck is unlikely to get better against Patrick Sandoval, who has looked solid in his last couple outings. He is coming off a game against the Rays where he allowed just one earned run over five innings. After allowing a first inning run in his first game of the year, he hasn’t allowed one over the last three.

The Angels are an average team when it comes to scoring runs – they are 15th in the league in runs scored. Graham Ashcraft has looked phenomenal in two of his three starts. The Brewers, who are third in the league in runs scored, got to him in his second start. If you remove that game, he’s had a 2.31 ERA outside of it. This Angels offense should have trouble getting to him, which should lead us to a NRFI here.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for April 20: No (-105)

Baltimore Orioles vs. Kansas City Royals

First Pitch – 7:10 pm EST
Kauffman Stadium – Kansas City, Missouri
Broadcast – MLB TV

Both of these teams have actually been fairly solid when it comes to early scoring. Each is scoring in the first inning right around a quarter of the time. However, my lean to the NRFI play here has nothing to do with the offense. Instead, this is all about the pitching matchup.

Corbin Burnes has been outstanding for the Orioles. He’s thrown 23.2 innings and has 25 strikeouts. His ERA sits at just 2.28 on the year and the outside metrics suggest it could be better. He’s opponent has better numbers in pretty much every category. Cole Ragans has thrown 23.1 innings and has 29 strikeouts. His 1.93 ERA is a touch better and he’s held his opponents scoreless in two of his last three starts. This should be one of the easier NRFIs out ther.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for April 20: No (-140)
