Underdog Fantasy MLB Daily Pick ‘Em Plays – April 17
Aaron Judge – Higher than 0.5 Runs
Judge has been pretty cold since this series with the Blue Jays started. He’s 0-4 in both games and has failed to reach base yet. However, he’s coming off a great series with the Guardians that saw him go 4-for-13 with three extra-base hits. So even though he hasn’t swung it well in this series, we know he’s recently found his groove.
What should help him find his groove even more is facing Kevin Gausman. In 41 plate appearances against Gausman, he’s reached base 19 times. He has four homers in that span. I also like his chances of going yard here, but the play on the run projection safeguards against him getting repeatedly walked.
Dansby Swanson – Higher than 0.5 Singles
Dansby’s average sit at just .222 this season, but the frequency of hitting singles has been pretty solid. Over 15 games in April, he has a single specifically in 10 of them. Furthermore, he’s another hitter who has seen past success against his foe today.
Swanson has seen the Diamondbacks’ Brandon Pfaadt just five times in his career, which is obviously a small sample size. However, he’s gone 3-for-5 in that span with a pair of singles and a home run. With the run he’s on, the power doesn’t scare me, and I think he sees Pfaadt well enough to get on the board.
Luis Severino – Higher than 6.0 Strikeouts
In his three appearances with the Mets, Severino has come in all around this projection. He met this number once, exceeded it once, and came up short most recently. The big difference maker here is the matchup. The Pirates have struck out a ton this season. They rank 27th in the league with 10.17 strikeouts per game. They’ve been even worse over the last three games (12.67 per game), and have been the worst in the league over that span.
