MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – April 18

Texas Rangers vs. Detroit Tigers

First Pitch – 1:10 pm EST
Comerica Park – Detroit, Michigan
Broadcast – MLB TV

This game is a bit of an unconventional play for NRFI, but I happen to like the matchup. The Tigers send out Kenta Maeda, who has an ugly 6.00 ERA so far this year and has given up a first inning run in two of his three starts this year. However, in his last start, he seemed to settle in. He only allowed one earned run in 6.1 innings to the Twins. The Rangers scored in the first inning on Wednesday, but had a dry spell of three games before that.

On the Rangers pitching side, we’re going to see the debut of Jack Leiter. The former Vanderbilt Commodore has all the hype behind him thanks to his electric stuff. While the Tiger have been hitting fairly well, its not easy when you have less info on a pitcher. I expect him to cruise in the early innings.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for April 18: No (-120)

Miami Marlins vs. Chicago Cubs

First Pitch – 7:40 pm EST
Wrigley Field – Chicago, Illinois
Broadcast – ESPN+

Both of these teams rank in the bottom half of YRFI percentage on the year – neither topping a quarter of the time. The pitching matchups won’t make it any easier on them either.

The Cubs have Jameson Taillon on the bump Thursday. He’s making his season debut, but the top of the Marlins lineup has been bad against him historically. The top four hitters in their lineup have combined to go 4-for-19 (.211) against him lifetime. Of those top four guys, only Josh Bell has an extra-base hit against him.

AJ Puk gets the call for the Marlins. He’s allowed one first inning run in three games pitched. What I like about him here is that they aren’t asking him to go deep. That allows him to let loose early with his biggest stuff. It paid off for him last time as he held the Yankees to just a run over four innings. I’m hoping for more of that version here to get another NRFI.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for April 18: No (-110)
