MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – April 8
Seattle Mariners vs. Toronto Blue Jays
First Pitch – 7:07 pm EST
Rogers Centre – Toronto, Ontario
Broadcast – MLB TV
Neither of these teams have been all that potent when it comes to scoring in the first inning. The Mariners did score in the first on Sunday, but that was the first time they scored a first inning run on the road – and only the second time this season. The Blue Jays has been scoring early even less. They’re 1-for-10 on the year when it comes to getting a first inning run. To make matters worse for each squad, both are in the bottom third of the league in total runs scored (22nd and 26th respectively).
The pitching side of things looks good for Monday as well. Jose Barrios has let up a first inning run this year in two starts, but he’s only allowed three runs total in 12 innings. Luis Castillo is the opposite side of that coin. He’s been touched up for eight earned in 10.2 innings. However, all of those runs have come in the third inning or later.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for April 8: No (-125)
New York Mets vs. Atlanta Braves
First Pitch – 7:20 pm EST
Truist Park – Atlanta, Georgia
Broadcast – MLB TV
This game has YRFI written all over it in a number of ways. The biggest one is that these teams have both been giving up a lot of early runs. The Braves have given up a first inning run in half of their games so far. The Mets are a touch better, but still have given up first inning runs in a third of their games.
From a pitching standpoint, Charlie Morton is a starter who isn’t going to do the YRFI any favors. He looked great in his first start and has notoriously good numbers against the Mets. Julio Teheran is making his first start for the Mets though, which is a bad sign. He didn’t do a full spring training. Plus, he has some pretty brutal numbers against Marcel Ozuna (.358 with 4 dingers), Ronald Acuna (1.834 OPS) and Adam Duvall (1.167 OPS).
