MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – April 4
Cleveland Guardians vs. Minnesota Twins
First Pitch – 4:10 pm EST
Target Field – Minneapolis, Minnesota
Broadcast – MLB TV
Both of these teams finished in the bottom half of the league in terms of scoring in the first inning last year. The Guardians were actually in the bottom third in 2023. So far this year, they haven’t been great at it either. The Guardians have scored in just 16.7% of their first innings and the Twins have done so in just 25.0%. The Twins are also 26th in the league in scoring overall, which should suppress those chances.
The pitching situation should also help the NRFI chances here. Pablo Lopez allowed a run in the first inning of his first game, but it came when he gave up a home run with two outs and two strikes. Tanner Bibee pitched a scoreless first in his first game. Additionally, none of the Twins have a history of hitting Bibee with any consistency.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for April 4: No (-130)
Chicago White Sox vs. Kansas City Royals
First Pitch – 7:40 pm EST
Kauffman Stadium – Kansas City, Missouri
Broadcast – MLB TV
Michael Soroka takes the hill on Thursday for the White Sox. He got shelled in his first start against the Tigers. They touched him up for three runs in that start and the White Sox managed to claw two of those runs back in the bottom of the first. Both of those are excellent signs if you’re looking at the YRFI here. To make matters better, the Royals have a 40.0% rate on the YRFI so far this year.
Seth Lugo looked much better in his first start, which came against the Twins. The White Sox haven’t been the most potent offense, particularly against decent starters. However, with the lean based on how likely to Royals are to score, I’m still comfortable with the YRFI in this one.
