MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – April 3
Cincinatti Reds vs. Philadelphia Phillies
First Pitch – 1:05 pm EST
Citizens Bank Park – Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Broadcast – MLB TV
This game pits a pair of teams who looked decent in the first inning last year. Both were in the top half of the league in scoring in the first inning. The Phillies ranked 10th and the Reds ranked 13th. This year has been a little tougher going for one and much easier for the other.
The Reds have yet to score in a first inning going into Wednesday’s action. The Phillies, meanwhile, have scored in the first inning in four of their first five games. With such a potent one side of this equation, you might expect a run to come in, but not with this pitching matchup.
Frankie Montas heads out to the hill for the Reds coming off a nice start. The Phillies starting lineup hasn’t seen him much, and have only Whit Merrifield with any kind of long term success off of him. Zach Wheeler kept the Braves at bay in his only start – and this Reds’ lineup will look like a breeze in comparison.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for April 3: No (-125)
Detroit Tigers vs. New York Mets
First Pitch – 7:10 pm EST
Citi Field – Queens, New York
Broadcast – MLB TV
Neither of these teams are off to particularly hot starts with the bats. The Mets have yet to score in the first inning on the year and the Tigers have just one time. The trend extends beyond the year as well. The Mets scored in the second fewest first innings last year (just 21.9%). The Tigers weren’t much better at 25th in the league and with 25.3%.
Despite the fact that it doesn’t appear so, the pitching matchup here is also a deterrent of early runs. The Mets send out Jose Quintana, who looked really good in his debut against the Brewers. It wasn’t until his pitch count got up there in the 4th that he really got in trouble. Ditto for Tarik Skubal, who threw six scoreless against the abysmal White Sox. The Mets do swing them a little better, but perhaps not much.
