Opening Day College Baseball Picks February 24th

3:00 PM +120 Pitt vs Maryland -150 (O/U 13.5)
PROBABLE PITCHERS
Pitt: Ryan Reed So. LHP (2023: 2.08 ERA, 4.1 IP, 4 K, 1 BB, 3.73 FIP)
Maryland: Logan Koester Sr, RHP (George Washington 2023: 6-3, 14 starts, 4.62 ERA, 89.2 IP)
This is a sell high point on a Pitt team that I predicted to finish last in the ACC. Pitt is currently 4-0 after a 3-game sweep of Maine and then beating a winless Washington team via walk-off home run last night. Expect a little bit of a hangover from that celebration as they run into the Big Ten stalwart Maryland.
The Terps won their opening weekend series on the road against Georgia Southern. Koester threw four innings, allowing just three hits and one run. As a team, Maryland’s ERA is 3.09, so even if Koester doesn’t go deep into this game again, expect the Terrapins pen to limit big offensive innings for Pitt.

Iowa: Marcus Morgan Jr. RHP (2023: 5-2, 15 starts, 3.72 ERA, 65.1 IP, 72 K)
Virginia: Jack O’Connor So. RHP (2023: 6-2, 3.52 ERA, 61.1 IP, 64 K, 25 BB)
This situation is a classic when betting on college baseball. On Friday, Virginia played (on paper) the worst of their three opponents in the first game, so they did not throw their Ace when 95% of teams threw their best pitchers on Friday.
Also, Iowa’s top 2024 MLB Draft prospect, Brody Brecht, throws on Friday. However, Marcus Morgan could have been the Big Ten Pitcher of the Year last year and is often overlooked on Iowa’s pitching staff.
Since we are seeing Virginia’s ace and another top college pitcher in this matchup, the total on this is set too high. Oddsmaker’s models probably just spit out the number and didn’t check who was pitching today.
The total should be more in the 11.5 ballpark. Especially since this Hawkeye lineup struggles at times as they average less than five runs per game against D1 competition.

Indiana: Connor Foley So. RHP (2023: 4-2, 3.72 ERA, 29 IP, 42 K, 21 BB, .162 BAA)
Baylor: Collin McKinney Fr. RHP (Perfect Game’s 33rd ranked RHP in 2022 class. Missed all of ’23 due to injury)
I picked Indiana on Friday, and I am once again riding the Hoosiers on Saturday. In my opinion, the Hoosiers are the better all-around ballclub. Also, I believe that Connor Foley is the best arm on IU’s pitching staff.
Last weekend, Foley faced off against one of the nation’s best offenses in Coastal Carolina. Foley threw four shutout innings with seven strikeouts against the Chanticleers.
The Hoosiers last year also had a deep bullpen and returned many of their most used arms. Currently, IU has a Team ERA of 3.25, and that will definitely play against Baylor.
Starting on Saturday for Baylor is redshirt freshman Collin McKinney. He didn’t have a great first outing as he walked three and allowed three runs in five innings against Oregon inside the vast Globe Life Field. Indiana’s offense has been firing on all cylinders so far this season, with a .926 OPS against good competition.
